"What interests me is interrelationship of man and nature in one sense-- the rhythm of the wind and the wind currents and the patterns in the sand and the rhythm in the waves and the bloodstreams in human beings and animals and everything."

"So these rhythms underlie everything and part of the unifying thing of everything -- that moves in life-- it has to be the basic movement. I've always been interested in that.." --Kenneth Callahan

For most of his life Kenneth Callahan has lived within sight of the Cascade Mountains near Seattle. Their craggy contours and somber tones have dominated his art.

As a student he traveled to Europe, later he worked on a boat plying between San Francisco and Hawaii, but in between he always returned to Seattle.

It was not, however, until he became a fire lookout during the war, stationed in a fog-shrouded post on a mountaintop, that he began to sense the symbolic aspects of the natural forces that surrounded him. Themes Callahan has since incorporated into all his work.
