PHILIP MCCRACKEN
Phillip McCracken was born in Bellingham, WA in 1928. He attended the University of Washington
where he received his Bachelors degree and left that summer for England. There, he studied with
famed sculptor Henry Moore.
McCracken is a versatile artist talented in various crafts including painting, glass art, and
metalwork, but is primarily a sculptor of wood and bronze. He often combines these materials and
creates sculptures of wood interweaved with metal accents. Creatures of nature such as birds,
reptiles and rabbits are favored subjects used in his work and reflect the respect McCracken has for nature.
Philip McCracken has had work displayed at many museums across the country including the Smithsonian
Institution, Washington D.C., and the Chicago Art Institute and part of the MONA permanent collection
in Detroit.
