"The Third Mind: American Artists Contemplate Asia, 1860 to 1989",
At the Guggenheim Museum, NYC

January 30th, 2009 - April 19th, 2009

Alexandra Munroe, Senior Curator of Asian Art of the Guggenheim Museum, visited Seattle last fall to view art works by major Northwest artists. John Braseth had the pleasure to host and escort Alexandra Munroe and her research associate, Ikuyo Nakagawa, to Seattle museums and private collections.

As a result, Morris Graves, Mark Tobey Kenneth Callahan and Paul Horiuchi are included in this major exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum. "The Third Mind: American Artists Contemplate Asia, 1860 to 1989" considers the dynamic and profound impact of Asian art, literature, music, and philosophical concepts on American art.

In the words of Alexandra Munroe, "Visitors will see 130 years of American creative culture through an entirely new lens and should appreciate the transformative influences of Asian art and ideas on the formal and conceptual achievements of American modern and avant-garde art."

If you miss this exhibition in New York City, the exhibit will be traveling to Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City Missouri and on view from September 26th, 2009 to January 3, 2010. Celebrated architect Steven Holl, whom was born in Bremerton Washington and attended the University of Washington, designed the Nelson-Atkins Museum's new building
