The beloved and renowned American painter Gaylen Hansen—one of the finest artists of our time—recently celebrated his 104th birthday. For this special milestone, Woodside/Braseth Gallery is honored to present an exhibition of 38 selected paintings by Hansen.
Gaylen Hansen is celebrated for his vibrant, surreal depictions of nature, often featuring animals and the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. From 1957 to 1982, he served as Professor of Art at Washington State University. After retiring, he and his wife, the esteemed artist Heidi Oberheide (1943–2023), moved to Whidbey Island in Washington’s scenic Puget Sound, where Hansen continues to draw inspiration from his surroundings.
Hansen’s paintings blend abstraction with recognizable imagery to create whimsical, dreamlike compositions. Frequently, he depicts himself as a cowboy or mythical figure, bringing humor, playfulness, and personal narrative into his work.
Over his long and distinguished career, Hansen’s art has been exhibited in museums and galleries across Seattle, Los Angeles, New York, Berlin, Beijing, and Singapore, and his work is represented in many public and private collections. He has received numerous awards, including the Flintridge Foundation Award for Visual Artists (2001). Between 2007 and 2010, his career was celebrated in a major traveling retrospective, Gaylen Hansen: Three Decades of Paintings.
At 104 years old, Hansen continues to work daily in his studio, creating art that inspires and delights. We invite you to visit the Gallery and experience the vitality, imagination, and enduring vision of this extraordinary artist.
