In celebration of his 104th birthday, Woodside/Braseth Gallery is honored to present “Gaylen Hansen: A Retrospective Exhibition”, featuring thirty-eight paintings created between 1995 and 2025—each hand-selected by the artist to reflect the wit, vitality, and enduring imagination that have defined his remarkable career.

Renowned for his vivid, surreal depictions of the natural world, Hansen transforms the landscapes and creatures of the Pacific Northwest into poetic, dreamlike narratives—often featuring his alter ego, “the Cowboy.” His art merges abstraction and recognizable imagery to create compositions that are both humorous and profound.

Over the course of seven decades, Hansen’s work has been featured in major exhibitions and museum collections across the United States and abroad, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Seattle Art Museum, the Portland Art Museum, the Boise Art Museum, and numerous university and regional museums nationwide. His paintings have also been exhibited internationally in Europe and Asia, earning him critical acclaim for his singular artistic voice and visionary storytelling.

From 1957 to 1982, Hansen served as Professor of Art at Washington State University, shaping generations of young artists. After retiring, he and his wife, the late painter Heidi Oberheide (1943–2023), made their home on Whidbey Island, where he continues to paint daily—his imagination as vivid as ever.

At 104, Gaylen Hansen remains one of America’s most beloved and enduring artistic figures.  We invite you to join us in celebrating this extraordinary artist and his lasting contribution to American painting.
